Crop protection is the science of managing the insects, mites, weeds, nematodes and pathogens (fungi, bacteria and viruses) that reduce crop yield and quality. Integrated pest management (IPM) is an ecological approach that combines several methods rather than relying on chemical pesticides alone. These include resistant varieties, crop rotation, field sanitation, biological control using natural enemies or microbial agents, pheromone traps, regular field monitoring and, only when needed, carefully targeted pesticide use. Plant disease management also draws on the plant's own immune system, for example through systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which can be activated to protect crops. Invasive and transboundary pests that spread across countries add new urgency to this field.
