Precision agriculture is a farm management approach that recognises that soil, moisture, nutrients and crop growth vary from one part of a field to another, and treats each area according to its needs. It relies on technologies such as GPS-guided machinery, yield monitors, soil sensors and variable-rate equipment that applies seed, fertiliser, water or pesticides in different amounts across a field. Remote sensing provides the information behind these decisions: satellites, aircraft and drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) capture images that reveal crop vigour, water stress, nutrient deficiency, weeds and disease. By applying inputs only where they are needed, precision agriculture improves yields, lowers costs and reduces environmental impact.
