Agroforestry is a land-use system in which trees or shrubs are deliberately grown together with crops, livestock or both on the same piece of land. Common forms include alley cropping, where crops grow between rows of trees; silvopasture, which combines trees with grazing animals; home gardens; boundary plantings and windbreaks; and multi-strata systems such as coffee or cocoa grown under shade trees. Trees on farms improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, provide shade and shelter, store carbon and supply products such as fruit, fodder, timber, fuelwood and medicines. Sustainable land use more broadly means managing land so that it meets present needs for food, fibre and income without degrading it for future generations.
