Agricultural Biotechnology and Genome Editing (CRISPR)

Agricultural biotechnology is the application of scientific tools to living organisms to improve crops, livestock and microorganisms used in farming. It ranges from tissue culture and molecular markers to genetic modification and, most recently, genome editing. Genome editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas allow scientists to make precise changes to a plant's own DNA, for example switching off a gene that makes a crop susceptible to disease, without necessarily introducing genes from another species. Alongside this, pangenomics, which studies the full set of genes across many varieties of a species, helps researchers find useful traits faster. Together these tools are speeding up the development of crops that are more productive, nutritious and tolerant to stress.
