Agri-biologicals are farm inputs derived from living organisms or natural materials. They fall into three main groups. Biofertilizers contain living microorganisms, such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate-solubilising bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, that improve the supply of nutrients to plants. Biostimulants are substances or microbes, including seaweed extracts, humic acids, amino acids and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), that enhance plant growth, nutrient uptake and stress tolerance. Biopesticides use microbes or natural compounds to control pests and diseases. Interest in these products is growing quickly because they can reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers and pesticides while supporting soil health.
